THE SETTING

La Mora is next to Altafulla, situated on the stretch of coast with the finest, most golden beaches in Catalonia, that give it its name: Costa Dorada. The village itself is just 10 km north of Tarragona and 80 km to the south of Barcelona, set in the region of Tarragonas, an area rich in archaeological sites from the Roman age.

Altafulla has a long seafront promenade with a small port. The area is also popular with surfers. Small, colourful houses contrast with the bright blue skies, and the wide expanse of sand is dotted with beach bars where you can enjoy refreshments or ice-cream while you contemplate the ocean.

A peaceful oasis with facilities for families

La Mora is a pine tree-filled haven of peace and tranquility, located on a hilltop that sweeps down to form the bay of Platja de la Mora, which is just a 10 minute walk from the house. Though the location is free from the tourist masses, it has a full range of services and amenities that enable you to spend an entire day out and about, should you wish to: restaurants, newsagents and shops that blend discreetly into the small seafront promenade.

You can also rent boats, surfboards, pedal boats and tickets for the bouncy castle. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards and has public toilets and showers. The setting is ideal for children because the water along the 1km stretch of the bay is very calm.

The water at the beach, which has an average temperature in summer of 24 degrees, has been certified by the Catalan water authority as “excellent” in terms of sanitary quality.

ECOFRIENDLY VACATION RENTAL

Holiday Home CASA DELS PINS is a spacious place. There is plenty of space for leisure and cooking, and for relaxation on one of its many terraces/balconies. The house has

• five bedrooms,
• two fully equipped bathrooms,
• a dining area
• and spacious living room with an open fireplace.
• The house also has a large terrace and a big garden, under the welcome shade of the pine trees. Unfortunately, barbecues are forbidden because of fire risk.

All rooms have a sophisticated, architectural layout on different levels.

Safe communal facilities

If you want to play beyond the garden, there is a basketball court right beside the communal swimming pool. All communal areas are set within well-maintained, spacious gardens distributed on different levels that make for an impressive view. There is also a childrens play area where the kids can while away the hours learning Spanish (the majority of the neighbours are Spanish). Access is limited to residents, so security is guaranteed.

Private garden and parking

Besides the communal garden, you live with the biggest garden of the community 🙂 If travelling by car: the house has secure, on-site parking that can be accessed directly from the inside of the house. There are also bicycle supports on the wall.

SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND

Mario, the owner of CASA DELS PINS, is the architect of the entire community including this ecofriendly vacation rental CASA DELS PINS:

I paid particular attention to spare as many pine trees from the construction work and to leave them where they were. Thanks to the shade and shelter offered by the surrounding vegetation, the temperature is comfortable in summertime.

Together with his wife Lluïsa, he considered the following measures in favour of the environement:

• The house has been constructed with the aim of avoiding air conditioning and minimizing the need for central heating.
• Instead of a dryer, one of the terraces has been fitted with lines for hanging and drying laundry.
• All the light bulbs are energy saving.
• The electrical appliances (washing machine and dishwasher) are new and comply with the EU A + + + standards, which means they are more environmentally friendly.

Besides that, La Mora has a public transport network (buses) that also connects the village with the nearby train station of Altafulla-Tamarit. You can take walks along several different paths with spectacular sea views.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Visit Tarragona, the capital of the province: you’ll find a wide variety of Roman monuments such as the Amphitheatre, a Roman mausoleum, the Roman forum and the Pont del Diable aqueduct. In 2000, the archaeological ruins of the old province of the roman capital, Tarraco, were declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

The Cistercian Route begins near Altafulla and combines three grand Cistercian monasteries: Santes Creus, Vallbona de les Monges and Santa María de Poblet. The latter is the largest and most beautiful in Spain and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For wine connaisseurs, the region of Priorat in the northeast is home to some of the finest grapes. Located in the steep, breathtaking hills of Serra de Montsant, this is the oldest wine-producing region in Catalonia and its wines, intense and full-bodied, are among the most famous in Spain.

And if you are a fan of white wine, the region of Penedès is not too far away. The hilly scenery of the area is reminiscent of the Italian region of Tuscany. The most famous cava producers such as Freixenet, Codorni­u or Bodegas Torres provide guided tours of their installations and vineyards, including on-screen presentations and a train that goes through their cellars. They also organise activities for children.

‘SLOW’ ACTIVITIES

To experience the Costa Dorada to its full, we recommend venturing beyond La Mora too. There is a nearby nudist beach that can only be reached on foot that goes by the tropical name of “Waikiki” and between Barcelona and Tarragona, there are plenty of crowd-free hidden gems, even in the high season. You can visit the neighbouring towns of Tamarit, Torredembarra, Coma-Ruga or San Salvador (El Vendrell).

Alternatives to “sun, sea and sand”

• Jungle Treck Adventure Park in the woods of La Mora/ Tamarit: aerial slides, suspension bridges etc.
• Horseriding in Altafulla or in the neighbouring town of Torredembarra
• Sailing at the Altafulla Boat Club
• Safari-waterpark “AquaLeón” in Albinyana, just past El Vendrell
• Bathe in the thermal springs of Montbrió or take a walk in Parc Samà
• Museum and concerts with music by Pau Casals in San Salvador (El Vendrell)
• Hiking or excursions by bike through natural reserves: Gaià, Aigüamolls de Torredembarra, Delta del Ebre, Montsant and Prades
